The activities in mapping and digitalization of Forest Resource are supported by both the Geographical Information System (GIS) and the Remote Sensing Units. The functions of these units include, but are not limited to:

• Providing the Department maps for management and operational purposes (i.e., enforcement and monitoring).

• Maintains records related to the gazettement of FRs and historical records related to licensing and logging operations in the State.

• Preparing maps for the purpose of gazetting new FRs, as well as the excision and reclassification of an FR

Assessments on the extent of forest cover for Sabah by Forest Sabah Department are conducted at intervals of two years and the latest Forest Cover report was produced in 2024, covering the 2023-2024 period. The current Forest Cover in Sabah is 4,633,465 hectares (ha). This consisted of Forest Reserves (3,575,035 ha), Sabah Parks (245,172 ha), Wildlife Sanctuaries (26,103 ha), Wildlife Conservation Areas (2,854 ha), State and Alienated Lands (784,301).
